Statement

Order 81 - Re-Engineering Iraqi Agriculture questions the overarching intentions of our politicians in implementing new laws to replace current law concerning Iraqi farming. U.S. Order 81 dictates that every Iraqi farmer must purchase genetically modified terminator seeds from one of two privately owned U.S companies. These seeds will produce sterile crops but failure to use these seeds will result in the confiscation of agricultural tools. The implementation of this was included in the 100 Orders as part of the Coalition Provisional Authority under Paul Bremer, the American Director of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance for post-war Iraq. This series is comprised of twelve sterile test tubes filled with seeds indigenous to the Fertile Crescent, as this was the birthplace of agriculture and Iraqi farming. Accompanying the object will be seed packets designed as high fashion objects of interest for the conspicuous consumer. The seed packets will be used as a delivery system mimicking those used by Monsanto-Cargill and the World Wide Wheat Company. Labeling on the packets will inform the viewer as to what Order 81 is and how to gain further information, which will be indicated by a website address ( Impedire co.). The web-based aspect of the project will act as a hub where people can download seed packets and labels to create their own awareness campaign.
